Barber shop: Hair today, gone tomorrow

Students looking to get a haircut need to fi nd a barber shop offcampus. The mobile barber shop “Highlights N Cutz” that stopped coming to campus mid-November will not be returning to Florida Gulf Coast University this spring, due to its controversial funding and the arrival of a new barber shop in Gulf Coast Town Center, TwinCutz. Student body president Juan Cubillo originally saw a need for “Highlight N Cutz” for students desiring what he calls “a certain style of haircut.”
“Now with TwinCutz, there’s another place to provide that style of haircut,” Cubillo said.
“Highlights N Cutz” stirred a funding controversy in early November, when it was revealed that $1,100 of Student Government’s Activity and Services fees were used to reserve a parking space for the vehicle and $500 of A&S fees were used to subsidize haircuts to students in the barber shop’s first days on campus.
Cubillo had previously assured the student body that the barbershop would not cost Student Government any money.
At a Senate Executive meeting in early November, then appropriations chair, Michael Danis suggested that this use of funds violated the finance code, because students are unable to use the service without paying for it – so it is not available to all students. “I just wanted the student body to know what was going on,” Danis said.
