David Bowie dies of cancer at age 69

The legendary rock star, David Bowie died at 69 the morning of Jan. 10, ending his 18-month battle with cancer. He has been a musical icon for decades and just released his 26th album, “Blackstar,” on Jan. 8, his birthday.
Bowie’s official Facebook page released this statement, “January 10 2016 – David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”
According to the United Kingdom website, Mirror, director Ivo van Hove, who worked with Bowie on the stage musical, “Lazarus,” said, “Bowie told me more than one year and three months ago that he had liver cancer, just after he had been told this himself.” Bowie’s publicist has not confirmed this statement.
Bowie left a huge mark in the music industry. Bowie’s ability to change from genre to genre was remarkable and admired by many musicians, such as Lady Gaga. Beyond his impressive resume, he left a legacy of breaking down barriers in music and also fashion. Bowie had a reputation of wearing crazy colored outfits, his wild hair and his outrageous makeup. He constantly reinvented himself, which kept fans on their toes. But, a big part of his appeal across generations was his focus on being an outsider — showing that it is perfectly acceptable to be a weirdo.
Bowie was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, and it called him “rock’s foremost futurist and a gene-bending pioneer, chameleon and transformer.” He earned two Grammy awards and throughout his career he sold an estimated 140 million albums. Based on all of his achievements, Bowie was to be honored at a concert at Carnegie Hall on March 31, featuring The Roots, Cyndi Lauper and The Mountain Goats.
The work Bowie is most known for is the movie he stared in, “Labyrinth,” and for the very popular songs “Space Oddity,” “Heroes” and “Under Pressure.”
Bowie leaves behind his wife, Iman, and two children.
