A crime alert released by FGCU’s University Police Department on Wednesday, August 19 notified students of a sexual assault that occurred on Tuesday, August 19 in South Village on-campus housing.
According to the email, the victim and suspect met through a dating app before arriving at the victim’s dorm room. Although the identity of the suspect has not been released, they do not appear to be affiliated with FGCU.
UPD urges students to revisit the safety tips – available within the crime alert – amid an increase of internet harassment, sextortion, and incidents related to dating apps.
UPDATE 8/20 3:00 p.m.:
FGCU UPD utilized the new License Plate Recognition system on campus to provide further suspect information for this case that occurred on Tuesday night.
“We believe in this case and others, the LPR data will assist in quicker and more successful completion of criminal investigations and thereby keep our campus and community safer,” UPD Chief Steven Moore wrote in an email this afternoon.
Moore asks that students review the safety tips that were included in the email sent out to the student body yesterday.
